Santa Cruz, CA -- October 8, 2012 – The National Bullying Prevention Center, founder of October’s National Bullying Prevention Month, reports that over 160,000 students in the United States stay home from school every day for fear of being bullied. The organization’s statistics also show that more than half of bullying situations will stop with peer intervention. In support of National Bullying Prevention Month, Claudio Franca Brazilian Jiu Jitsu schools (CFBJJ) in Santa Cruz, Watsonville and San Jose are offering free, introductory Jiu Jitsu classes for kids of all ages.

Cabrillo College Counselor Retires, Takes a Long Walk

APTOS, Calif.- In just two weeks, Shelly Skye, retired Cabrillo College counselor will be in Mexico starting her 2,650-mile walk to Canada.

After all those years in education, you'd think she would want to relax.  What's even more amazing, she's 60!   

She plans to walk for six months and in that time raise money for City of Hope Medical Center in Los Angeles, which is treating an uninsured friend with cervical cancer.  Check out the full article in the Santa Cruz Sentinel.

Capitola getting In-Shape

The latest city to get on board and get "In-Shape" is Capitola.

The health club franchise said in a news release it is excited to celebrate National Nutrition Month with weekend events that welcome members and the community to take charge of their health and educate themselves on a healthier more nutritious lifestyle.

Capitola has joined with Inner-Fit Science to educate members and the community by providing classes several times a month at the club. Classes started earlier this month and will continue thru April.

Tyson Meat Recalls Tainted Ground Beef Sold in California

WASHINGTON (CBS News)— A Nebraska meatpacker recalled more than 40,000 pounds of ground beef products distributed in 16 states after a test confirmed the presence of E. coli, the Agriculture Department said Friday.

The products were shipped to institutions and distributors in Alabama, California, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, South Carolina, Tennessee, West Virginia, and Wisconsin.

Tyson Fresh Meats Inc. of Dakota City, Neb., recalled 10-pound chubs of chuck fine ground beef 80/20, packed in cases containing eight chubs.

USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service said in a statement that the problem was discovered through routine monitoring that confirmed a positive result for E. coli. No reports of illness have been received.

Sales of a Breast Cancer Awareness Wreath helps fund mammograms for women in need

 

The Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital Foundation (SVMHF) announced that Creekside Farms of Greenfield will pay for mammograms of qualifying women in need. The free mammograms will be provided at Salinas Valley Memorial’s Nancy Ausonio Mammography Center.

Creekside Farms produces wreaths sold by fine online retailers as well as on their own website. A specially designed pink wreath is available, and through the end of October—Breast Cancer Awareness Month—Creekside will donate $10 for each wreath sold.

Bed bug insecticides causing sickness, CDC warns

Bed bug infestations are bad enough, but a new report finds that more than 100 Americans have become sickened from exposure to the insecticides used to eliminate the pests.

The cases happened across seven states, researchers said, and bed bug insecticide exposure may have even contributed to one death.
