New Tacos Morenos Location in Capitola

The Moreno family opend a new Tacos Morenos location on 41st Avenue in Capitola. This is the second location for the family owned restaurant. The other is on Water Street and opened back in 1981. It is owned by Esteban and Maria Moreno.

Their son Juan opened Tacos Moreno 2 in a grand opening this past saturday.

Department of Fish and Game Sets Salmon Limit

The Fish and Game Commission adopted ocean salmon sport fishing regulations that allow for a limited season in 2010 today.

Financial Assistance for Junior Guards

Capitola Junior Guards is celebrating its 30th year of helping kids learn ocean safety. The program builds self-confidence and self-esteem, and helps prepare interested youth for future work as lifeguards. It also provides instruction in the basic fundamentals of ocean water safety, first aid, lifesaving, fitness, and good sportsmanship.

The program is offered at a reduced rate:
All participants: $115 / session; $195 all summer

BLOT Graffiti Artist Arrested

Santa Cruz Sheriff's Department and the Capitola Police Department arrested a man wanted for felony graffiti vandalism. Christopher Henry, also known as the BLOT graffiti artist was wanted on vandalism charges totaling over $500,000. Last week Capitola Mall security caught him tagging property at the mall. He was released, only to be rearrested at his home on Rosedale Avenue today.

Over the last 10 months the sheriff's department has been tracking BLOT markings in Santa Cruz, Capitola, Soquel, Aptos and Live Oak. Police say he tagged two ATM's in Capitola that had to be replaced. Those totaled $500,000.

Police say boyed painted or etched graffiti on the front of businesses, home fences, structures you could see from the freeway and a number of poles and signs.

Police booked him in the county jail on $35,000 bail.

Target Proposal In Capitola Stirs Mix Reaction

Could Target in the Santa Cruz area become a reality?  Thursday night, Capitola's city council discussed plans to bring the retail giant into the former Gottschalks building at the Capitola Mall.  Remember, Target hoped to move in to a vacant lot off of La Madrona Drive in Scotts Valley last year, but eventually backed out of the deal.  A new store would make it two in the county.  Now this idea is causing some mixed reaction in Capitola.  Outdoor World Manager Eric Barnett doesn't like the idea Target could move next door.  Target sells some of the same supplies as this mom and pop shop, and Barnett thinks it could hurt business

"It might but we've got some pretty good prices and we're pretty competitive.  Also people like to support their local business you know so that accounts for a lot of things," said Outdoor World Manger Eric Barnett.

This seems to be the issue in Capitola, supporting local businesses.

Capitola City Council Votes to Block Subdivision

The Capitola City Council voted unanimously to block the owner of Surf and Sand Mobile Home Park from sudividing the park into dozens of individual lots. The council chambers were packed last night as council members gave their votes.

Owner Randy Reed hoped to subdivide the lots and then sell the properties to the people already living there. The residents argued this would price them out of their homes and force them to move.

Mayor Sam Storrey said one of the reason's for the unanimous decision was the owners voted 63-1 to block the subdivision.

The mayor did say they expect this decision to be taken to court. 

Energy Efficiency at the Capitola Mall

Capitola's City Council is set to debate whether to allow Kohl's to put solar panels on it's roof at the Capitola Mall. The panels would generate up to half of the store's energy. The council meets Monday night at 4:00pm.
