Surf Museum Goes Solar

SANTA CRUZ, CA (February 21, 2013) -- The Santa Cruz Surfing Museum has gone solar thanks to a generous donation by Sandbar Solar and Electric of Santa Cruz. Installation of solar panels last weekend on the west facing roof will save up to 80% of the museum's annual electric bill. The value of the project is $10,000 and was the brainchild of Scott Laskey, owner of Sandbar.

Laskey was first concerned for the museum when he learned of its potential closure in 2009. "The Surfing Museum is an icon of Santa Cruz surfing history and I knew then I wanted to help" said Laskey. As a surfer, father of two, with surfers as employees, Laskey said he wanted to preserve the surfing legacy for future generations.

His opportunity came last spring when he installed a solar project for Doug Thorne, a member of the original Santa Cruz Surfing Club and current member of the Santa Cruz Surfing Club Preservation Society (SCSCPS).

Holiday Photo Contest Winners

SANTA CRUZ COUNTY, CA – With all the great holiday events in Santa Cruz, this coastal destination knows how to captivate Christmas lovers. To celebrate the holidays and encourage locals and visitors alike to capture great holiday memories in California’s favorite beachside destination, the Santa Cruz County Conference & Visitors Council asked the public to upload their best “Holidays in Santa Cruz” pictures to their online photo contest. First place winner Myra Rittenhouse, of Santa Cruz, submitted a photo of snowmen on the beach. Myra won a $300 shopping spree in Capitola Village and two night stay at the Inn at Depot hill in Capitola, CA. Second place winner Joy Marquez, of La Selva Beach, won with a photo of a fantastically decorated Christmas house in Santa Cruz.

Aptos Mariner Wins Congressional Art Contest

Today, Congressman Sam Farr today announced that Aptos High School student, Holly Hernandez, is the winner of the 2012 Congressional Art Competition, An Artistic Discovery. The winning piece, “Right to Bare Arms”, will be displayed in the halls of the Capitol along with winning art from across the country.

“The Central Coast is known for its vibrant artistic culture and these students echo that tradition in their work,” said Congressman Sam Farr. “I would like to congratulate Holly Hernandez and all the participants for their inspiring pieces of art.”

Holly Hernandez will travel to Washington, D.C., courtesy of Southwest Airlines, to be honored at a Congressional Reception. Holly will also receive a $1500 renewable scholarship from the Savannah College of Art and Design.

Carmel High School student, Liyanna Bea Sadausky was named the 2nd place winner with her art piece “Peaceful Burden”.

Capitola Gets in On Food Tour Action

The Santa Cruz Food Tour is expanding to Capitola in May.

The Capitola Food Tour will cover 2.3 miles over three hours and include stops at the Bloomsbury Tea Room, Gayle's Bakery, Paradise Beach Grille, and Shadowbrook. Guides will weave in local history and architectural insights along the way.

The first tours are scheduled for 2:30 p.m. May 23 and 24 and will reoccur Wednesdays and Thursdays through Nov. 22. Discounted tickets, $52.50 each, are available online at www.santacruzfoodtour.com using the code CL6. Call 800-838-3006.
