Suicide Prevention Service of the Central Coast-Need Volunteers

Suicide Prevention Service of the Central Coast is seeking volunteer responders for its Suicide Crisis Line.  In the past 5 years, over 400 Central Coast residents have died from suicide. While the problem is very real, prevention is possible and powerful. Through training, volunteers learn how to connect with, listen to and support someone who is suicidal in staying safe. Volunteers who answer the phone say that the experience has changed their lives forever.

Volunteer training begins on April 16, 2013 with no prior experience is necessary. To join the community of  dedicated  and caring responders, please call (831) 459-9373 or visit online at www.suicidepreventionservice.org.

Surf Museum Goes Solar

Surf Museum Goes Solar

SANTA CRUZ, CA (February 21, 2013)  -- The Santa Cruz Surfing Museum has gone solar thanks to a generous donation by Sandbar Solar and Electric of Santa Cruz. Installation of solar panels last weekend on the west facing roof will save up to 80% of the museum's annual electric bill. The value of the project is $10,000 and was the brainchild of Scott Laskey, owner of Sandbar.

Laskey was first concerned for the museum when he learned of its potential closure in 2009. "The Surfing Museum is an icon of Santa Cruz surfing history and I knew then I wanted to help" said Laskey. As a surfer, father of two, with surfers as employees, Laskey said he wanted to preserve the surfing legacy for future generations.

His opportunity came last spring when he installed a solar project for Doug Thorne, a member of the original Santa Cruz Surfing Club and current member of the Santa Cruz Surfing Club Preservation Society (SCSCPS).
